Survival Tips for Escaping a Venus Flytrap
A ladybug was caught by a Venus flytrap. The leaves were completely closed, so I thought it was already doomed, but after a night passed, the leaves had opened a little. It seemed like the ladybug was using clever survival tactics to try to escape.
Survival Tips for Escaping a Venus Flytrap:
Stay still if caught by the Venus flytrap: Do not move; this is a tactic to trick the flytrap into thinking it hasn't caught anything. The leaves of the flytrap will eventually open again if no prey is caught inside. Stay still until the leaves begin to open. Struggling will only make it worse.
Remain still if you touch the sensory hairs: The trigger for the flytrap's leaves to close is stimulation of the sensory hairs on the leaves. The leaves only close if two sensory hairs are triggered within a short period of time. If the intervals between touching the hairs are too long, the leaves may not close or may only partially close. If you touch the hairs, stay still and wait.
Find an escape route: While waiting, look for any gaps or openings you can use to escape. The ladybug in this video seemed to struggle to find an escape route, possibly due to poor vision. Be careful when moving around, as it increases the risk of triggering the sensory hairs again.
These were the survival tips for escaping a Venus flytrap. Keep them in mind if you're ever caught!
