A Rare Sight on a Snowy Day.

Snow had settled on a Jorō spider. I noticed it this morning while checking around the garden, which was covered in snow. This Jorō spider is the sole survivor in our garden. Around our home, there were about 15 Jorō spider webs, but all of them disappeared by late November after laying eggs. However, for some reason, this individual hasn’t laid eggs and remains in its web.

It doesn’t seem unwell—it moves its legs when the weather is warm and adopts a defensive posture by lowering its abdomen horizontally to prepare for the cold. Snow fell while it was in this defensive posture, causing snow to accumulate on its abdomen. I thought for sure it wouldn’t survive, but once the snow melted, it carried on as if nothing had happened.

I hope it manages to survive through to spring.
