Here’s today’s microscope photo, featuring frost flowers again. This time, it's frozen leaf water on the leaves of Sonchus asper (spiny sow-thistle). The frost has taken on a shape reminiscent of sugar candy. Despite the freezing cold, the plants remain active. Another individual of Sonchus asper nearby is even in bloom. At this time of year, I wonder if it’s self-pollinating or if there are insects carrying pollen. I’ll take a closer look and observe.
